Authorized independent service facility (A.I.S.F) for Woodward governors
We are specialized in the maintenance of diesel engine fuel injectors and governors for ships. I work as the chief in the governor department, valve department, and nozzle department. "Governor" is a speed regulator. As this part is important to stabilize engine rotation, it can be called the heart of the ship. TOKYO NOZZLE is designated as an authorized independent service facility (A.I.S.F) for governors manufactured by Woodward, Inc. The maintenance staff are required to have full training at the manufacturer for a required period. During the training, the first thing we learn is the operation principles of the gorvernors thoroughly. We actually dismantle and assemble them, then perform a power test with a tester. However, it does not mean that those who had this training can provide maintenance service immediatly after. They still have to accumulate experiences at the factory to be a professional maintenance staff.
Maintenance starts from precisely understanding the working principals
A governor is not a part working alone, but it works linked with various engine mechanisms. As it is a receiver and transmitter at the same time, it is important to deeply understand the structure around the engine considering a governor as its center, and keep collecting information. Otherwise it is impossible to maintain it, as it is such a delicate part. Once malfunctions occur to the engine, we suspect the governor first. To maintain it, we have to start from precisely understanding its working principles. After all, experience means a lot. Without obtaining skills to solve various problems, it is impossible to find malfunctioning parts, nor resolve them. Even after so many years, I still keep searching for ways to maintain governors.
Challenges from Analog to Digital
Until now, governors were mainly analog-type. However, they are shifting to digital-type. It means that the senses of the experts such as viewing and touching will not work anymore, and that the knowledge to ascertain digital codes will be required. However, it does not mean that those who know well about IT can immediately become a maintenance staff for governors. It is not that easy, and the experiences and skills of those who know well about the principals of the governors will still be required. As there must be maintenance methods which can be realized only by us, we would like to pursue them. If governors evolve from analog to digital in the near future, we will also have to evolve through challenges.
